Functional Appliance
Having a “set-back” lower jaw can make it appear that the upper front teeth are too far forward and prominent. This can also make it difficult to close the lips.
As the lower jaw grows, wearing a functional appliance will allow it to move forward, reducing the prominence of the upper front teeth and making it easier to close the lips together.
What is a functional appliance?
Functional removable appliances work on both the top and bottom teeth simultaneously, helping the jaws align correctly. The most common is the Twin Block appliance.
What are Twin-Blocks?
The Twin Block appliance is used to treat an underdeveloped lower jaw during the growth phase. These usually phase I appliances that are followed by fixed braces (phase II).
What Is an Overjet?
The top teeth should be 2-4mm (horizontally) ahead of the bottom teeth. The ideal overjet is 2-4mm.
When should the Twin-Blocks be worn?
As Twin-Blocks harness the power of the chewing muscles and growth, they should be worn all the time, approx 6-9 months. Your Orthodontist will discuss this further with you.
