Metal (Stainless Steel) Braces
Tried and trusted traditional metal braces allow specialist orthodontists to treat the most complex of cases.
Using classic metal braces or ceramic braces to correct complex issues is possible. Their only difference is their material. In this case, metal brackets are less expensive (more economical) than ceramic ones. We use an award-winning manufacturer, American Orthodontics, who supply orthodontic products with a commitment to excellence.
What are metal (fixed) braces?
In the UK, metal fixed braces (commonly referred to as “train tracks”) are the most widely used orthodontic appliance. Your Orthodontist chooses bespoke prescription brackets that are tailored especially for you. These braces consist of metal squares (brackets) that are bonded to the surface of your teeth. During your treatment, your brackets will stay on your teeth and guide the precise movement of your teeth – resulting in your dream smile.
How do these braces work?
The braces are connected by a thin metal wire (archwire) that guides the teeth to straighten with the help of gentle pressure. Wires are held in place using a ligature. These are either metal or a small elastic band (module).
You can customise your braces with a wide selection of elastic bands if you desire, and these are changed at every adjustment appointment. You will visit us every 6-10 weeks while under our care. We will perform planned mechanics at these visits, including changing wires, springs, and elastics/ligatures.
Benefits of Metal (Fixed) Braces
Orthodontic treatment using fixed braces is highly effective. Traditional braces not only straighten teeth but also address a wide range of orthodontic issues, from simple to complex, such as:
- Significant overcrowding (crooked teeth)
- Severe overjets
- Deep overbites
- Correcting teeth that are stuck (impacted)
- Creating space for patients missing teeth and for preparation of jaw surgery
